A Worm in the Well (1995)

<< Hartwell’s Year’s Best SF 01 – 5/14 >>

A typical old-school science fiction story that boils down to a courageous and also more than bit desperate (financially speaking) space freighter captain doing a last, suicidal run for a spacetime anomaly captured in the photosphere of the sun. It’s a pretty simple story, but I like the tech descriptions weaved into the story, that imply a pretty advanced level of technology, not just old rockets in space or slightly updated present day tech.

There’s not much else to say, it’s mostly about the attempt to get the gimmick. Since I like those kinds of stories when done well, meaning the characterization is good and the attempt to portray physics at least realistically to some extent, AWitW hits right home. A solid piece of hard SF.

There a sequel to this as well.
