Darkworld Detective (1982)

Darkworld is a place where things aren’t what they are on other worlds of the Unity of Planets. Magic is real and the Lord of Darkworld can change the laws of nature per decree. Kamus is half human, half-Darklander, which makes his spell casting unpredictable. But Kamus’s real calling is the PI business. He’s the only detective on the whole planet.

DD is made up of four cases (aka 4 short stories whose titles are itself nice tributes: The Big Spell, The Maltese Vulcan, Murder On The Galactic Express and The Man With The Golden Raygun) that bring Kamus slowly in conflict with the Lord of Darkworld himself. Fast paced action, a typical noir hero and the at first unlikely mix of sword and sorcery with SF and PI business make for a compelling book.
