A pet rat gets flushed down the toilet, meets the love of his life and gets entangled in the plans of a power hungry toad. Yeah, I know, sounds not much different from any of the other CGI animated animal movies that came out last year, but this one is different. Flushed Away has attitude, specifically a British one. Much of this comes from how everyone speaks, but it’s more than that, how the characters move and behave. Aardman succeeded in creating characters that come alive on the screen and make you care. And the toads were hilarious.
The story is well done, from the moment Roddy meets Rita you feel like there’s a direction where the movie is heading, not just a sequence of funny moments arbitrarily stitched together. Sure, like in most kids movies there’s a simple overarching theme, a message, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a bad one and thankfully the movie doesn’t hit you over the head with it.
