This was an eight-issue anthology series about Hellboy and other characters from the BRPD. Not expecting much at all, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the stories. Sure, some of them are pretty weak. Especially those that tried for a more humorous tone and style completely missed the mark on getting the characters right.
Even if you go for the funny vein you have to make the characters consistent with how they are portrayed in the regular series. While some of the more serious stories also missed the right voice and the typical atmosphere of the Hellboy comics, many more (much more than I actually expected) got it right. Nearly each of the eight issues of the series had at least one excellent story that was just as good as the canonical ones by Mignola.
