Magic Bites (2007)

Another urban fantasy series. I needed a little time to get warm with it, but then I was completely hooked. Some of the elements of the series are quite typical, two of the big supernatural factions are were-animals and vampire-related, the main heroine is a very independent character and has connection with all the big power players and there are hidden depths to her talents. On the surface nothing that you haven’t seen in similar series.

The big difference is that the author duo (despite the name on the book it’s a duo) seems to be more knowledgeable in mythology than most writers of urban fantasies. But instead of ramming all their knowledge down your throat use it sparsely and to make their world and the nature of the threats far more interesting than what you expect.

Unlike most urban fantasies the present world is far more gone into fantasy territory than most similar series. Reminded me of Shadowrun in some aspects, with less of the high-technology. And the vampires in the series are quite different to other series, mindless beast that are controlled by necromancers. None of the romantic stuff.
